چکیده

Background Aortic diseases are often associated with changes in vessel geometry and blood flow. Currently available tools provide limited regional information that do not fully capture these complex alterations. Studies have shown that 4D flow MRI can be used for detailed in-vivo assessment of vascular hemodynamics with 3D visualization and quantification of aortic flow. Advances in rapid prototyping (3D printing) have also provided the ability to manufacture complex models quickly and at low cost. The purpose of this study was to illustrate the feasibility of combining 4D flow MRI with 3D printing to create a comprehensive tool for cardiovascular evaluation.

3D MR flow analysis in realistic rapid-prototyping model systems of the thoracic aorta: comparison with in vivo data and computational fluid dynamics in identical vessel geometries.

The knowledge of local vascular anatomy and function in the human body is of high interest for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. A comprehensive analysis of the hemodynamics in the thoracic aorta is presented based on the integration of flow-sensitive 4D MRI with state-of-the-art rapid prototyping technology and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Rapid prototyping was used...

Improved assessment of aortic 3D blood flow with combined k-t accelerated 3D CINE bSSFP & 4D flow MRI

Background To determine hemodynamic parameters from 4D flow MRI, vessel boundaries are typically depicted by calculating a 3D phase contrast MR angiogram (PC-MRA) from 4D flow magnitude and flow images. However, this approach is limited by 1) low blood-tissue contrast of the magnitude images and 2) velocity weighting of PC-MRA may not fully depict areas of slow or swirling (vortex) flow. As a r...

Characterisation of spatiotemporal aortic flow and aortic wall biomechanics in coarctation

The thoracic aorta performs sophisticated functions which depends largely on its almost unique structure. Coarctation of the aorta is a relatively common congenital anomaly, which causes a heavy burden of morbidity and mortality worldwide. As emphasized by Suradi and Hijazy in this issue of the journal, the long-term results can be very variable due to many factors. There is now a growing reali...

4D geomechanical simulations for field development planning

3D and 4D geomechanical can be time-consuming to build and calibrate. However, once such a model is built, it is relative straightforward to use this model for various field development and management applications. In so doing, the return on the initial investment of time and effort in the creation of a 4D geomechanical model can be substantial. I present a case study where a 4D geomechanical m...
